Your Home, Your Spa: Homemade Face Masks And Face Scrubs

A couple of months ago, I received a request from one of my cherished avid MyMy Blog readers to post something on the topic of Home Spa.  I sincerely apologize that I hadn’t done this sooner but I do want to say that I truly loved the suggestion.  Being a Spaholic myself, I can’t stress enough the many benefits of indulging oneself in spa treatments (massage, facials, foot scrub, body scrub, etc.) once in a while (okay, once a month, actually… at the very least).

So, in response to that request, I’m starting off this series (yes, it ought to be a series; there’s so much to talk about!) with facials you can do at home using face masks and face scrubs.  And why would I encourage y’all to try these recipes?  Well, first of all, it’s way cheaper than getting it done in a commercial spa, or using the store-bought facial products.  You’ll find most of the ingredients in these recipes in your kitchen.  Second, the absence of chemicals and preservatives makes it a healthier and safer alternative.  Furthermore, you do not have to worry about traveling, or having to call in advance to make a reservation at the spa, or having to be away from home for an hour or two.  Your much needed (and deserved) time for rejuvenation and relaxation can be enjoyed in the comforts and privacy of your own home any time of the day, as often as you need it.

Homemade Face Masks And Face Scrubs Recipes

All Skin Types

Coffee and Cocoa Face Mask

Coffee and cocoa help in decreasing puffiness in the face and the eye area and in rejuvenating tired, dull complexion.

Ingredients:

  • 4 T finely ground espresso or coffee beans (or instant coffee)
  • 4 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6-8 Tbsp. dairy product (use whole milk, heavy cream, unflavored yogurt, almond milk or coconut milk)
  • A few drops of honey

Substitutions: You may use an egg instead of dairy if you prefer that.  If you have a slightly dehydrated skin, replace the dairy with oils, such as olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil or almond oil, and it will work wonders.  If using oils, cut the amount in half or it will be too runny.

Preparation:

  • If you are grinding your own coffee beans, make sure you grind them finely in a grinder so they don’t scratch your face.
  • Mix coffee and cocoa powder in a bowl.
  • Add the dairy product and stir until a smooth paste forms.  You can use less dairy if you like a thicker paste.
  • Stir in the honey. (you may warm it up a little in the microwave so it mixes better).
  • Apply the paste to your clean face and neck.
  • Let the face mask dry.
  • Wet a washcloth and press it to your face to loosen the face mask.
  • Gently rinse face with warm water.

Oatmeal and Yogurt Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp oatmeal, finely ground
  • 1 tbsp unflavored yogurt (organic would be even better)
  • A few drops of honey

Preparation:

  • Add the yogurt to the oatmeal in a small bowl and mix together.
  • Warm a few drop of honey.
  • Stir the honey into the yogurt and oatmeal mixture.
  • Apply the mask to the face.
  • Leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse off with several splashes of warm water.
  • Follow with a warm washcloth.
  • Apply moisturizer.

Basic Baking Soda Face Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 2 to 3 Tbsp. Baking soda
  • Small amount of water

Preparation:

  • Mix the ingredients into a paste.

Optional:  Let your scrub double as a mask!  Let it sit a few minutes before scrubbing and rinsing.

Helpful Tips

  • Make a small cup of ginger tea and one cup of chamomile tea.  Soak a couple of cotton wool pads in the chamomile tea and then cover eyes while you are relaxing with the mask.  Drink the ginger tea for a more Spa-like experience.
  • To further create a Spa ambiance in your home, why not play a relaxing instrumental and burn a couple of scented candles or light up your scented oil burner.
  • Remember that homemade face masks and scrubs do not contain preservative chemicals.  It would be best to use up your entire homemade face mask and scrubs and make a new batch each time.  If there’s really more than enough for you alone, why not consider doing it with a friend or your mom, or your daughter.  It would be a great bonding moment too.
  • Before adding any mixture on your face, make sure that you have thoroughly cleansed your face and removed all traces of makeup.  Then test a little bit of the face mask or face scrub on a section of your arm or leg to make sure you do not have an adverse (allergic) reaction to the ingredients.

So there you go! Try some of these homemade face masks and face scrubs and let me know how it turns out for you! Enjoy your facial in your very own Home Spa!  icon smile Your Home, Your Spa: Homemade Face Masks And Face Scrubs
