Introducing The New Facebook “Timeline”
At Facebook’s Annual Developers Conference, or F8, which was held last September 22nd in San Francisco, CEO Mark Zuckerberg finally unveiled the new “Timeline” user interface for Facebook, with the tag line “Timeline: The Story Of Your Life“. Despite having amassed strong protests from a large number of users following some changes made to the News Feed some time last week, Zuckerberg was excited to introduce this new change which is believed by many social media experts to radically and significantly alter the way users share and display information on their profile. As Zuckerberg said, “It’s how you can tell the whole story of your life on a single page…all your stories, all your apps, and a new way to express who you are”.
To quote John Stevens and Rob Waugh, “The new Timeline feature is reminiscent of an online scrapbook, with the most important photos and text that users have shared on Facebook over the years. The timeline can go back to include years before Facebook even existed, so users can add photos and events from, say 1995 when they got married, or 1970 when they were born.”
The large photo cover feature at the top of the profile page is, in my humble opinion, Timeline’s biggest attention grabber. As the name suggests, there is a timeline that breaks down all of a user’s posts into mini highlights dating all the way back to when the person first joined Facebook. Users will be able to see every recent post published but even more interesting is the fact that Timeline allows a user to easily jump from one specific time to another, and view all posts published from within that specific time frame. I will talk more about these specifics in my next blog post and I will include my personal opinion on what I think are the strong points and weak points of this new Facebook Timeline.
Meanwhile, if you can no longer contain your curiosity, and you wish to get a special developers preview of the new Timeline (before it goes live some time in October), simply read the following steps on how to change your Facebook profile to “Timeline”:
How To Change Your Facebook To ”Timeline”
Step 1
The first step in how to change your Facebook to Timeline is to go to the Facebook Developers Page by clicking here. This is the page that you will see. If you haven’t signed up before, you will need to sign up for an account. Just follow the steps for creating an account. Otherwise, simply click on “Apps” at the top of the page.
Step 2
Click on “Create New App” at the upper right hand side of the page.
Step 3
A box like the one below will pop up, and you’ll need to fill in the boxes with a “display name” for your new app and another one for a “namespace“. You can type in any name that you want but for the “namespace”, all characters have to be lower case and make sure there are no spaces in between characters. Wait for the system to check if your desired name is available. Finally, for this step, make sure to check the box next to “I agree to the Platform Privacy Policy“.
Step 4
A new pop-up box like this for security check might appear. Just follow the instructions and hit “submit“.
Step 5
This should be the next page you’ll see.
Step 6
On the left hand side of the page, click on “Open Graph Getting Started“.
Step 7
…and it will lead you to this page. Fill in the boxes (blanks) with any one word “action” and any one word “object” describing what people can do with your app (ex. People can pick a fight). Then hit “Get Started“.
Step 8
Lastly, go to your Profile page and provided that you followed all the steps, you will see this message box at the top of your profile page. Simply click on “Get It Now“.
Voila!
Your new Facebook Timeline has just been activated! This was what mine looked like when I first experimented with it.
This is how your recent stories and other posts will be displayed.
Viewing older posts was very easy. Simply click anywhere on the timeline bar.
You may also use other photos for your cover photo. Here, I created my own banner. Whatever photo you choose, it definitely helps set the tone or attitude for your page. This is taking your Facebook “online presence” to a whole new level, y’all!
So there you are, friends! Now you know how to change your Facebook profile to Timeline. I hope I was successful in simplifying the procedure for you. Enjoy your new Facebook Timeline and please feel free to share your thoughts on this new Facebook interface with me below!

I understand what you mean. At the time I wrote this post, it was said that Timeline will be open to the rest of the Facebook community. I’m quite surprised it hasn’t happened yet. But I’m sure there must be a good explanation. Perhaps FB Admin is still making sure everything works out right before rolling it out for everybody else. I guess we’ll all just have to be patient… otherwise, just follow the steps above and you can immediately enjoy the Timeline without having to wait any longer.
ok i just did mine it worked, it’s really nice!! <3<3
Congratulations, Jewelle! Thank you for utilizing the tips I shared on this post and for letting me know how it turned out for you.

Yannie, if you’re still encountering some challenges up to now, please refer to my new post, The Facebook Timeline Revisited and follow the steps there instead. Thanks.

unbelievably complicated I gave up.
Hi Dick,
Don’t give up! You can do it! Changing your FB timeline may have looked a little complicated, but it’s really not! However, that may have been your experience perhaps because you tried upgrading AFTER the Timeline went live back in January. The procedure has changed since then. Check out my new post for the new procedure: The Facebook Timeline Revisited
MyMy
Tried it 5 times and still not working, went through step by step
Russell, since the Timeline went live worldwide in January 2012, the procedure has changed. Check out my update on How To Change Your Facebook Profile To The New Timeline.
Exactly what I was searching for! I appreciate you for putting this up!
Thanks, Kayce! I appreciate your visit!
I hate the timeline….how do i get my old facebook profile back….
Hi, Lena. After careful and thorough research on this, and to quote Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg,
Now, on its face, that might sound like a bad thing to you and me, but if you’ll indulge me for a moment, I think that we can and should look at this in a positive light (especially since there is nothing we can really do about it now, anyway… right?). In truth, the FB timeline really is a fresh, new way of looking at Facebook and of sharing your information with your friends (and the rest of the world). In my opinion, it is much easier to navigate, allowing users to jump from one specific point in time to another (e. g. you’re looking for specific posts or updates from last year, etc.). I think that FB Timeline is definitely more fun in terms of design in the way it displays your photos and other activities. So, since we can’t do anything about it anyway, unless you’re prepared to walk away from Facebook all together, I would encourage you to embrace the new design and setup, and let’s just try to work through any challenges together.
Anyway, I’m sure Facebook will be making things more “user friendly” going forward, so that this isn’t so challenging for us non-geeks.
Regarding privacy and security settings in Facebook, the changes may take a little getting used to. However, in my humble opinion, in the grand scheme of things, this is a minor hurdle to overcome in the Facebook user experience. In fact, I find it much easier now to change settings with the new FB timeline than was the case with the old Facebook profile setup. (Look for me to expound on this subject in an up-and-coming post in the near future!)
Again, since we have no choice but to just accept this (based on what Mark Zuckerberg said), it may be wise to just try to familiarize ourselves more with the new Facebook timeline and enjoy it in the process, as opposed to fighting it or complaining about it.
That’s what I think. How about you?
Here is a new update on the Facebook Timeline. Check out my latest post, The Facebook Timeline Revisited. Hope it eventually works out for you and that you’ll change your mind about the new Timeline.
Its not working. I gave up
Red, that is most likely because the procedure has changed since the Timeline has gone live worldwide some time in January of this year. Here is the latest update on that: The Facebook Timeline Revisited. You’ll be surprised at how even more simple and easy it is to activate the Timeline now. Good luck and hope it works out for you this time.
Help please! I had timeline, reverted back to the old, but want timeline back, but I cannot get it – help!!
Patricia, if you can no longer see a button on your own profile page that says “Get the Timeline”, then try going to a friend’s page (a friend who is already using the Timeline). There should be a notification box at the top of your friend’s page that says “This friend is using the Timeline” with a small green button that prompts you to “get it now”. Simply click on that button. Hope this helps.
