An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away
In actuality, it’s not really the doctor that you should be worried about, it’s the nasty microorganisms that attack your immune system and make you sick! Another thing you don’t want is for them to attack at a time when you know you can’t afford to see the doctor. Right?
Almost everyone in my family is down with a nasty cough and cold right now. Even I wasn’t spared! What’s extremely disturbing is that it isn’t the kind that just goes away like it normally should when treated with a good amount of bed rest, a bowl of chicken soup or a cup of steaming ginger or lemon tea. It’s as though these germs had mutated into some sort of a superbug!
I’ve lived my entire life seeing doctors write prescriptions for antibiotics for even the slightest symptoms of infection. Hardly any doctor that I’ve encountered would let a patient leave with a simple order to take lots of rest, lots of water, and an extra dose of vitamin C. But we all know that there are negative side effects to taking antibiotics and since the day I learned about that, I have done my best to stay away from it as much as possible. I do understand, however, why a doctor sometimes would think that there is just no other course of action to take than to prescribe antibiotics.
So here’s some valuable information I would like to share with y’all, my dear Readers, which you might find helpful the next time your doctor writes you a prescription for antibiotics…
Good Cop, Bad Cop
We already know that cough, cold and flu symptoms are caused by either viral or bacterial infection. If it is caused by a virus, then antibiotics ain’t gonna be of any help. If it is caused by bacteria and it happens to be one of those “superbugs” or germs that have somehow found a way to outsmart the drugs, then it can only be killed by antibiotic therapy. However, we also know that most antibiotics are so strong that it kills not only the bad bacteria but also the good bacteria, the primary role of which is to fight off the bad bacteria, that live in the digestive system (where 80% of our immune system is located). This is the reason why people who take antibiotics experience some kind of diarrhea because our digestive system gets out of whack in the absence of the good bacteria.
So the solution therefore is to replace the good guys by taking in probiotics at the same time you’re taking the antibiotics. Well, not “at the same time” like “together” in a single pop, but taking probiotics a minimum of 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking the antibiotics. That way, the antibiotics would have enough time to do its job without killing the good guys (the probiotics).
Now, since we often have to deal with “superbugs” known to be very stubborn or resistant against some antibiotics, a good way to boost the potency of your antibiotics is to drink lots of green tea while you’re on antibiotic therapy. According to the information I’ve been reading, doing this is kind of like putting your antibiotics on steroids, so to speak, allowing the antibiotics to fight these “superbugs” more quickly and ferociously.
Now you have another great reason to enjoy your green tea! New superbugs have developed antibiotic resistance, but green tea makes antibiotics more potent and can kill resistant strains of bacteria “superbugs.” (BodyEcology.com)
Prevention vs. Cure
As much as it can be avoided, I would suggest for you to turn to antibiotic therapy only as a last resort and only as prescribed by your doctor. Whether you see a doctor or not, try to treat the illness as naturally and less damaging to your body as possible.
An ounce of prevention is still far better than a pound of cure. Always keep that in mind. Do not neglect taking your daily multivitamins, especially your vitamin C to avoid getting sick in the first place. There are many inexpensive brands available at your local drugstore, so “insufficient budget” isn’t really an excuse anymore (and frankly, it never was a justification) for taking your health for granted. There are also other good products and supplements on the market known for boosting the immune system such as zinc, omega fatty acids, echinacea (which is an all-natural supplement for fighting off infections), including probiotic supplements. That and good ol’ well-balanced diet, 6-8 glasses of water daily, 8-9 hours of sleep, a healthy lifestyle and a cheerful disposition will surely help keep both the “superbugs” and the doctor away.
Note: Only take antibiotics prescribed to you by your doctor, and exactly as your doctor prescribed to avoid developing antibiotic resistance which can lead to serious health risks.
