Burberry Lip Velvet | Review

Early this year, I finally got to try the Burberry Lip Velvet Long Wear Lipstick.  If I’m not mistaken, this line was introduced to the market two years ago with twelve stunning colors originally, but the Burberry shops in the Philippines didn’t sell their makeup products.  I wasn’t keen on purchasing makeup online so getting it from the Burberry website wasn’t an option for me either.  Unless I’m ordering something that I’ve already used many times before, when it comes to buying a new makeup product, I have to go to the shop and physically examine, test, and try on the makeup.  I mean, seriously… How many of you here have learned their lesson the hard way – that when it comes to makeup, “what you see isn’t always what you get”, right?

So, to make a long story short, it was only when I went to Thailand that I was able to get my hands on them!

I was surprised to find these babies at Central Festival in Phuket. I must have tried on seven out of the nine colors available then.  I was like a kid in a candy store – I wanted to try them all but didn’t know where to start! Haha!

“Burberry innovation brings a new finish for lips: a velvety matte radiance, inspired by the most opulent of English fabrics.  Iconic pigments give incredibly dense, luminous colour; gel technology gives weightless, imperceptible feel and comfortable long wear performance, while triglycerides and wild rose continuously hydrate.  The result is effortlessly breathable, protective and elegant.” (

The packaging is very unique and consistent with Burberry’s famous trademark – the plaid Burberry pattern embossed on a sleek gunmetal grey matte casing with a magnetic snap closure that locks in place only when the proper sides of the body and the cap are aligned (a simple twist of the cap and the magnet will realign the proper sides and lock the casing).  Cool!

The same plaid pattern is also etched on the lipstick bullet.  How lovely is that?!

Right from the first application, I immediately fell in love with the Burberry Lip Velvet Long Wear Lipstick. The product glides on smoothly – and true to its name – feels just like velvet on the lips!  Very lightweight and doesn’t feel sticky at all.  It’s laced with a very mild fragrance, to its advantage, and I say that because the scent is very ritzy – very Burberry (which we all know is a brand that has been synonymous with luxury and elegance for many years).  Kung merong “mukhang mayaman”, ito “amoy mayaman”! ;)

This lipstick is so richly pigmented than once you’ve put it on, what you get is a gorgeous, more vivid version of the color that you see on the bullet.

I left the mall extremely delighted with my purchase of these three colors from the Burberry Lip Velvet line – Redwood (No. 304), Pink Amber (No. 306) and Bright Poppy (No. 311).

Redwood is red-brown, like the Redwood tree (after which the color was named).

Pink Amber is pink with soft yellow undertone, almost like pink-coral but more subdued and pink is the more dominant hue.

Bright Poppy is a deep berry-red, or more accurately, burgundy-wine-red.

The most outstanding quality of the Burberry Lip Velvet Long Wear Lipstick in my opinion is that despite its velvety matte finish, it doesn’t dry out the lips.  Keeping in mind that matte lipsticks look awful on dry, chapped lips, it would have been a huge deal-breaker if it contributes to the problem, right?

As for its “long wear” claim, I’d say that the color can last up to eight hours, probably even longer if you will do the layering technique.  When I did my makeup look using the Bright Poppy lipstick, I started around 1 pm.  I did my photo shoot (photo shoot talaga?) and didn’t touch (or retouch) my makeup for the rest of the day.  I had dinner at 7 pm and when I checked in the mirror around 9 pm, there was still a visible pink stain on my lips. The color was not as vivid as the first time I applied it but there was still a trace of the lipstick left, and that was after I had some pasta and some drinks.  Not as equally impressive as the staying power of the Smashbox Infrared Matte or MAC Ruby Woo, but I can say that the Burberry Lip Velvet did not disappoint either. :)

Once again, a closer look at the swatches of the three colors…

Burberry Lip Velvet Long Wear Lipstick is definitely my new favorite lipstick!  Among the three colors though, I personally love the No. 311 (Bright Poppy) the best, simply because it’s a showstopper!  It’s been my favorite go-to color whenever I’m inspired to pull an “Old Hollywood Glam” look.  Most women would predictably go for a red lippie so using Bright Poppy instead will surely make you stand out!

What about you?  Which Burberry Lip Velvet color was most attractive to you?
