I am what you would call a “social drinker” which I would define as someone who only drinks alcohol when in social gatherings (or at least, that’s generally the case with me). When I do drink, I usually opt for a frozen margarita, martini or wine. However, on the rare occasion that I would have a beer, I’d always go for San Miguel Light because it doesn’t have that strong bitter taste to it and, as the name clearly suggests, it’s low-calorie and doesn’t sit too heavy on my tummy.
So when San Miguel Beer and Nuffnang came up with this project that challenges bloggers to find the perfect pairings of their favorite dish and one San Miguel Lifestyle Brews beer, I thought, “Why not?”. I love taking on such challenges!
Being the beer expert that I definitely am not, I asked a couple of friends to come with me and help me out on this beer tasting adventure… and an adventure it indeed turned out to be!
A Drinking Experience That’s Above The Ordinary
Our adventure began with finding a place that served all three San Miguel Lifestyle Brews beers — Premium All-Malt, Cerveza Negra and Super Dry — which turned out to be tougher than we thought it would be. We were at Greenbelt 5 and all of the places we checked only served one or two of the beers. We eventually found MESA Filipino Moderne which served all three. Yipee!!! Now, time to get drunk… er… get to work!
Next on our list of tasks was to order the smorgasbord that will comprise our candidates for the pairings. Before we met for this beer tasting adventure, I did a little bit of research on which types of food go best with which types of beer (because, like I mentioned earlier, I’m not a big beer drinker) and one thing that stood out in my mind was that malt beer goes perfectly with grilled and roast meat, and that anything with a light and sweet flavor will also bring out the sweetness in the malt beer. Since I had my mind set on trying out the Premium All-Malt beer, this information was what I used as a guide as I chose what food to order.
We ordered the classic pulutan, Pork Sisig with Egg, Inihaw (Grilled) Platter, and Deep Fried Battered Calamari.
How Does San Miguel Lifestyle Brews Amplify The Taste of Our Favorite Dish?
Even though we had the guide I mentioned above, we decided to be somewhat adventurous and do some “mixing and matching” on our own.
Here’s what we concluded:
- The San Miguel Premium All-Malt Beer was a perfect match with the pork barbecue, grilled mussels and grilled pork liempo. Since pork and mussels both had a very mild flavor to them, and the malt beer also had a mild, sweet flavor, they complimented each other. The sweet barbecue sauce that coated the pork and mussels also perfectly matched the Premium All-Malt beer.
- The San Miguel Cerveza Negra paired best with the Pork Sisig. Since the Cerveza Negra is a very strong beer with a bitter aftertaste, anything bland would be overwhelmed by the flavor of this beer. The Sisig‘s distinct flavor, in my opinion, perfectly brought out the flavor of the Cerveza Negra in a way that no other food that I know of would have.
- What I found remarkable was that the San Miguel Super Dry beer was the perfect choice when it comes to seafood (fish, shrimp, mussels), especially when dipped in the very spicy “sawsawan” (dipping sauce). Although I said earlier that the malt beer paired well with the mussels, it didn’t work so well with the shrimp and the fish. The malt beer somehow left the shrimp & fish tasting a bit more “fishy”. The Super Dry, though, brought out the smoky flavor in these grilled seafood entrees and none of the “fishy” aftertaste, making it a truly delectable experience! The strong taste of the Super Dry beer also was effective in neutralizing any spicy flavor so it’s even more perfect when the grilled seafood was dipped in a spicy vinegar and soy sauce dip.
It didn’t seem to me that the Deep Fried Battered Calamari, on its own, stood out with any of the San Miguel Lifestyle Brews beer. Our theory was that the calamari was too bland that all three beers overpowered its taste. When it was dipped in the spicy vinegar sauce however, and then followed with the Super Dry beer, that was when we enjoyed it. So again, the San Miguel Super Dry beer works perfectly with spicy food.
Of the three, my favorite San Miguel Lifestyle Brews beer was the Premium All-Malt beer because it’s light and sweet, very gentle to my under-developed beer palate. However, when it came to the pairings, I loved how the San Miguel Super Dry beer amplified the flavor of the grilled seafood. Because I’m a huge seafood lover, that turned out to be the most remarkable discovery for me. This means that there is now a beer with which I can enjoy my favorite grilled seafood anytime! I’m super thrilled!
Finding the perfect pairings of our favorite dishes with the San Miguel Lifestyle Brews beers was certainly a fun and delightful experience! It was an amazing discovery of the different pairing possibilities and certainly taught me how to better appreciate different beer flavors.
For women like me who are “social drinkers” or those who are not heavy beer drinkers, I personally recommend the San Miguel Premium All-Malt. It’s sweet, light and won’t mess up your party mojo ’cause it certainly won’t get you drunk all too easily, haha!
Add a little touch of elegance to your celebration this holiday season. Have your Noche Buena feast with the San Miguel Lifestyle Brews beers for a drinking experience that’s above the ordinary! Just remember, DRINK MODERATELY.
