Weekend Reflections: Being Appreciated

As human beings, we naturally thrive on appreciation, recognition and respect.  In your lifetime, how many times have you heard lines like these?

  • “Sa lahat ng pagod ko, isang simpleng ‘thank you’ man lang sana…wala pa?!”  (“Considering all my efforts, a simple ‘thank you’ would have been enough… still nothing?!”)
  • “Ten years working for this company, pero mailap pa rin ang promotion!“  (“…still the possibility of a promotion seems so far-fetched!”)
  • “Wala kang utang na loob!  Sa lahat ng ginawa ko para sa ‘yo, ‘yan pa ang igaganti mo sa akin?!”  (“You ingrate!  After all I’ve done for you, this is how you repay me?!”)

We’ve heard these lines one too many times from movies, from teleseryes, from our friends, even from within our own families.  We most likely have blurted out something to that effect ourselves.  It just goes to show that being the imperfect creatures that we are, we’ve all had our moment of weakness such as this — when we feel the need to admit or stress our need for appreciation, recognition and respect.

If you ask me, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with recognizing exceptional individuals who truly deserve being appreciated and honored for their achievements and for the positive impact they have made on others.  I believe that such gesture would be the least that the rest of us can possibly do to return the goodness that those people have paid forward and to keep the flames of positivity ablazing; and if you are a recipient of such recognition, there certainly is nothing wrong with feeling happy about being appreciated.  It is indeed a very happy emotion for anybody to feel!

Being Appreciated As A Blogger

We, Bloggers, are no exception.  No matter what motivated you to blog, whatever your niche, whatever your target readers may be, we all (secretly?) seek or desire to be appreciated, recognized and respected — one way or another — by readers and fellow bloggers alike.

Just last Friday, Globe Tatt Awards 2013 was held at the Manila Peninsula Hotel, honoring those who made remarkable impact on the local social media landscape by way of nominations, screening, judging and public voting.  I will humbly admit before you guys my own “moment of weakness” as I share the thoughts that ran through my head that night:

  • Wow!  Buti pa sya, nanalo sya!
  • Wow!  Buti pa sya ang dami nyang votes…
  • Wow!  Buti pa sila, nominated…
  • Wow!  Buti pa sila…invited…

(not necessarily in that order)

I briefly wondered what it takes to be hailed as one of the best bloggers or social media influencers, and realized that being a fairly young blogger, I have a looooong way to go and still have a lot to prove.

But before I could start pigging out at my “pity party”, the Lord spoke ever-so-gently to my heart.  This was what He told me…

“Yes, those people are being recognized and honored for their excellence and yes, without question, they all deserve to be on the spotlight… but they are being honored for fulfilling their own calling, the purpose for which they do what they do.  Most of them worked hard to get to this point, while some of them may have climbed their way to the top overnight, but what does it have to do with you?  You, on the other hand, MyMy… why are you writing?  Why are you blogging?  What do you aim to achieve with your blog?  What are you aspiring for behind all your posts?  To seek the appreciation and approval of men?  To be appreciated, recognized and honored by men is a good thing.  It’s a blessing that also comes from Me; but it doesn’t end there.  The highest form of recognition is something that goes beyond the applause of men, and that is what you should be aspiring for.  So think about why you are writing again and if you stay committed to your calling, the appreciation and honor that you deserve will come to you.”

Immediately after I heard His words, I felt better and truly happy for those who were honored at the Tatt Awards 2013, without any trace of envy whatsoever.  I began to see things more clearly.  It’s like visualizing them all being lifted up into the sky on a plane.  I watch them in pure admiration but have no reason to feel sad or feel any self-pity since I have my own plane to catch!  Their plane is no better than mine, neither is it any indication that I’m less special than they are.  We have different take-off schedules, different destinations, different tasks, that’s all.  I’m happy and at peace with that thought. I felt re-energized and motivated once again.  icon smile Weekend Reflections: Being Appreciated

Being Rewarded

So today — only two days after that heart-to-heart conversation with God — this comment from one of MyMy Blog‘s readers came in (I hope you don’t mind my sharing this, Lois):

Coffee Scrub Comment Weekend Reflections: Being Appreciated

Y’all might be wondering what the big deal was with this message, so I’m gonna tell you — IT IS FOR THIS VERY REASON THAT I BLOG!

You see, guys, to be told about how my blog posts are being used to inspire, encourage or better the lives of other people is the highest form of appreciation, recognition and honor that I can ever receive.  I will be forever grateful to God for giving me the opportunity to share His love and blessings through blogging; and to you, my dear Readers, for welcoming and appreciating what I have to share.   This is the only honor I aspire to achieve — to someday be affirmed by God Himself that I have lived out His purpose for me.  icon smile Weekend Reflections: Being Appreciated

“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” ~ Matthew 23:12

Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor”. ~ Proverbs 29:23

“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’ ” ~ James 4:6

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” ~ 1 Peter 5:6″

Do you feel unappreciated and unimportant right now?  Find your comfort and assurance in the Lord for He doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called… and for as long as you stay focused on what you believe to be His calling for you, He will lift you up in due time!

I appreciate your honesty, Jing. :) Like I said, we all have our moments of weakness. What’s important is that we know now how to combat those thoughts the next time they come around. Trade your sorrows and insecurities for the hope and joy of the Lord. :)
